Opened Eyes

I have been on S2S more than once, but the experiences were completely different. After the first time I went, I had such a righteous anger about the poverty and people who had lost hope. It drove me to want to continue to do the tour so I could share the love of God with them. As I walked through what I thought was a familiar place, I began to see my city’s true colors. Those colors not being the glamorous city many people believe to be true. They were the colors of hurt, hopelessness, and tragedy. When I saw the look of defeat on the people’s faces it hurt me. I could almost feel their heartache inside of my spirit. At the time I hated feeling that way, but now I’m grateful for it. I believe it was God’s way of humbling me by putting me in their shoes for just a moment.

S2S gave me a fresh cup of perspective on life in general. Through this I was taught that everyone is only a few choices from being on the streets and having nothing. There are so many incredible people on the streets that are just in a bad place in their lives. A perfect example is a lady I met named Jeanie. I will forever remember her for her pure heart and beautiful spirit. She was joyful in the middle of a painful situation. I think that the world is filled with stereotypes that fill people’s heads with lies. Lies such as, they are homeless and worth nothing or she does ‘that’ for a living, so why pay any attention to her. But these lies are simply the enemy trying to trick us by making us believe the lies. He’s trying to stop us from doing what God has called us to do, which is reach out to His hurting children.

The people I have talked to are remarkable and have God given gifts just like every other human on earth. So much potential is being wasted because of bad situations, not bad people! I am so grateful to God for opening my eyes to what really goes on right around me at a young age, because now I can pray that God will equip me with what I need to reach out to those who have been labeled unreachable. We all have a purpose, and maybe ours is to help others achieve theirs! I have such a huge passion to make a difference in other people’s lives because of my S2S tours. All of this can be summed up into one statement…If we would simply open our eyes and our hearts, we could make such a huge difference in this world.
